In 2018, both New York State and New York City passed laws intended to combat workplace sexual harassment.  All employers are required to adopt a written sexual harassment prevention policy, including a complaint form, and provide annual sexual harassment training for every employee.

Philanthropy New York recognizes that providing annual training is difficult to complete in a way that is cost effective, especially for smaller member foundations.

As a service to PNY members, we have created a partnership with local employment attorney Amanda Fugazy to provide trainings to our members at a discounted cost per employee. PNY will host three group trainings at our office and split the cost of the training evenly among participants so each member organization pays a per-employee cost instead of the higher fee to bring training in-house. (For member foundations with more than 25 employees, we recommend hosting in-house trainings.)  Training will be provided on three dates in 2019, and space will be limited to 30 participants in each training:

Training Overview

While NYS and NYC training requirements now focus on sexual-harassment, best practice has always been, and remains, to train to prevent all forms of workplace harassment. This interactive training will comply with NYS and NYC mandates, while focusing on prohibiting all forms of workplace harassment. The first two hours will be appropriate for all staff. It will include:

  • An overview of forms of discrimination and workplace harassment;

  • How clear standards, policies and practices can encourage an anti-harassment culture; and
  • A review of your foundation’s complaint process.

The final hour of the three-hour training will be exclusively for managers who have a reporting responsibility within their organizations. This portion will focus on the specific responsibilities of managers and how to recognize inappropriate behavior and take appropriate action.

Intended Outcomes

Upon completing the training, you will be better able to:

  • Recognize all forms of harassment and discrimination; explore common scenarios that might occur in your foundation
  • Understand the ways that harassment and discrimination could take place both inside and outside of the office place
  • Recognize inappropriate behavior and learn to take appropriate action
  • Learn how to make a claim without fear of retaliation

Managers will also learn to:

  • Understand your obligations to report harassment or discrimination
  • Learn how to protect employees from retaliation

**Please note: All attendees must bring a copy of their own organization's sexual harassment policy to the training.**
