In April 2020, after learning of the total elimination of all summer camps and summer jobs programs, Children’s Aid launched Recovery Lab – an initiative to mitigate the devastating effects we feared the ongoing crisis would have on New York City’s most vulnerable young people in summer and fall 2020.
Recovery Lab was designed to (1) address the immediate academic and social-emotional needs of children and youth in NYC’s most vulnerable neighborhoods, (2) ensure students were prepared to transition to the 2020-2021 school year, and (3) identify and promote systemic changes in how young people are served going forward.
While the impetus was to respond immediately to what we hoped would be a temporary set of circumstances, what we learned along the way are a set of ideas that have long-term implications. We appreciate the opportunity to briefly describe the overall effort and share the promising practices, key themes, and recommendations that emerged from Recovery Lab.
