Activating New York City’s Middle-Wage Economy is an in-person convening of the New York City Workforce Funders Collaborative's learning network featuring new research on in-demand middle-wage occupations from Burning Glass Institute. This session is an update on the collaborative’s recently announced strategic focus: increasing connections to middle-wage occupations and upskilling opportunities for low-income New Yorkers.
The program will open with a fireside chat with New York Times reporter Eliza Shapiro, in conversation with Garrett Lucien, Executive Director of Coro New York. Shapiro will discuss her extensive reporting on affordability issues, her profiles of workers and families, and the role of journalism in shaping the public discourse on New York City’s economic challenges.
The collaborative’s research partners, Burning Glass Institute and the Center for New York City Affairs, will then present new analyses of NYC’s in-demand middle-wage occupations and the demographics of New Yorkers in low- and middle-wage jobs.
What will you learn?
- Which middle-wage occupations are most in demand in New York City and offer the strongest pathways to economic mobility.
- How affordability challenges and labor market shifts are affecting low- and middle-wage New Yorkers and the workforce ecosystem.
