Handling difficult conversations with colleagues can be one of the most challenging leadership skills. While many of us avoid them, difficult conversations are inescapable and often arise in routine interaction with colleagues, e.g. when delivering or receiving feedback, managing conflict, or aligning different work styles, and so on.
In this workshop, we will provide context and practical methods for handling difficult conversations. Participants will be introduced to a framework that includes: managing oneself; being able to hear and understand other points of view without necessarily agreeing with the colleague; effectively communicating in a way that allows your colleague to efficiently hear and understand your point of view; and being able to step out of the fray to discuss what is actually going on in the conversation.
The workshop will include presentation of best practices by the facilitators and exercises in which participants have the opportunity to rehearse the core techniques that will be taught.
Explore
- The costs of not having difficult conversations in the workplace
- Having greater clarity on what makes these conversations difficult for parties involved
- Greater understanding of how to convey messages effectively
- Practice tools for managing one's and the other person’s emotions so that the message gets through and the conversations lead to learning
This session does not require prior participation in other similar workshops. However, for those who attended the feedback workshop last June, Effective Methods of Giving and Receiving Feedback, this session will deepen your ability to tackle difficult conversations.
