In this interactive wrap-up to the Financial Series, participants will explore how funders can support nonprofit grantees by assessing their own financial reporting requirements. We’ll step into the shoes of grantees to understand the realities that nonprofits commonly face. Together, we’ll examine how internal reports (like budgets) and external reports (like audits) tell different stories—and why they don’t always match. 

This session moves beyond compliance to focus on practical, equitable approaches: how to request financial information that is meaningful, complementary, and reduces unnecessary burden. Through case studies and peer discussions, you’ll learn strategies to ensure your financial reporting requirements align with your foundation’s overall approach to grantee partnership.

Upon completing this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the different types of financial reporting and what each reveals
  • Identify common challenges and pain points faced by nonprofit grantees  
  • Discuss why internal and external financial reports may not match—and what that means for funders
  • Evaluate the purpose behind your foundation’s financial reporting requirements and explore ways to modify them to reduce burden on grantee partners

Speakers

Who should attend?

Funders with less than two years of experience in the field – program-officers, CEOs, and other staff, as well as trustees. It is also recommended for experienced grantmakers seeking a refresher in the basic financial tools of grantmaking. This interactive virtual offering help funders build their skills to analyze grantee financial documents.
