** For CEOs and Trustees Only **

Are you committed to listening to community members with direct knowledge, experience and proximity to the issues your funding seeks to impact? Join us to explore bringing those voices into the room where the latter can hold the most meaningful power - the board room.

This workshop will offer funders the knowledge and tools to consider why and how to bring community members onto foundation boards as equal and full participants. We’ll share the nuance around defining the community and how funders should consider hierarchies and power imbalances as they work to bring community members on board. Through case studies and learning from peers who have done this work, participants will develop an understanding of how transformative (and at times challenging) this work can be.

This session will offer hands-on, practical guidance around recruitment, onboarding, supporting community members most impacted – and the cultural changes that must accompany these shifts in composition in the board room. Participants will also consider why community members would even want to join a board, and explore risks around tokenism, extractivism, conflicts of interest, and how funders can ensure that these community members and their communities benefit from board service. Participants will leave with a strong understanding of how these shifts can help embed equity values and advance their commitment to listening and ultimately, to justice.

What will I learn?

  • Understand how including community members on foundation boards is an important way to listen and to shift power
  • Leave with actionable steps for how to bring your communities on board
  • Build awareness and skill to lead the culture change needed to transform governance as a both a locus of and lever for shifting power
  • Hear examples from peers in the room who have brought community members onto their boards
