** This session is designed for CEOs and Senior Leadership of Programs only. **
We are at a critical juncture in our country. Following global protests for racial justice in the summer of 2020, many institutions committed to focus on more racially equitable outcomes. However, these commitments are being challenged by a strong backlash in policy, media, and legal frameworks which threaten progress. In this critical moment, it is imperative that philanthropy ask how we center mission, rather than centering risk. Regular re-commitment and strategic thought partnership is required to meet this resistance and develop creative new approaches to fulfill the vision of a more racially just society.
Philanthropy has the power to test boundaries and counter structural racism. And, this power requires careful analysis of risk tolerance, sharing of tools, data and creative approaches, and the support of thought partners.
If you are a leader who has recently asked yourself “How do we build an approach to risk that pushes our institutions to the edge and takes risks that others cannot?," please join us. Philanthropy New York, in partnership with the Perception Institute will host a deep-dive discussion aimed at supporting foundation leaders to identify ways that they can support their institutions and stakeholders in fulfilling their commitment to equity work.
We will hear from institutions that are developing research, building narrative frameworks, and peers who are navigating challenging board conversations. And, we will have time to work together to share wisdom and peer learning around approaches for work with board, staff, and stakeholders.
What will I learn?
Participants will be able to:
- Express challenges and identify tools and try out strategies to stay the course
- Practice techniques for sustained racial equity work that boost confidence while lowering the risk for litigation in this political climate
- Introduce goal framing and ways to balance ongoing problems with success stories or bright spots to help lift them up
- Identify ways to balance technical solutions (transactional, tactical) with adaptive solutions (more complex, systemic lens)
