2020 Grantmakers Salary and Benefits Survey

Philanthropy New York is once again partnering with the Council on Foundations for the 2020 Grantmakers Salary and Benefits Survey. This survey collects data on compensation and benefits costs among community, private, operating and public foundations. PNY members receive member-only access to New York City metro area data.

The survey will be open until May 31st . COF expects to release the data in late September, at which point we will use the online benchmarking tool to generate a customized report for our members on compensation, benefits practices and diversity demographics in the New York metro area. We know timely information is critical to you and will do our best to turn around the New York regional data quickly. Survey participants will also receive a copy of the national report from COF and access to the benchmarking tool for your own customized benchmarking.

Community, private, public, and operating foundations are eligible for participation. Designate one or more individuals from your team to represent your organization. Multiple individuals from the same organization can work on your submission simultaneously. If you participated in the 2019 survey, go to Benchmark Central and log in using your cof.org credentials to start the survey. If you did not participate in the 2019 survey, email the first and last name, title, and email for each individual needing access to research@cof.org.

What info will I need to complete the survey?

Most participants refer to the following documents:

  • Current year's IRS Form 990 (estimates are fine)
  • Organizational budget
  • Payroll reports
  • Benefit summary plan documents
  • Job Descriptions
  • Compensation data from your HR system (current salaries, job titles, reporting relationships, years in position)
  • Last year's survey responses (if relevant)

Questions?

Questions about the survey or to request access to the benchmarking tool should be directed to research@cof.org.
