Philanthropy New York Calls for Solidarity Amid Ongoing Pressures on the Philanthropic and Nonprofit Sector

Monday, October 27, 2025

At Philanthropy New York, we believe philanthropy is strongest when it acts both independently and interdependently— when each organization can pursue its mission freely, and when we come together in community to uphold the principles that make our work possible.

Recent politically motivated investigations and public attacks on foundations — including several of our member organizations — threaten that independence. When government oversteps and targets philanthropic foundations for pursuing their missions, everyday Americans lose the support they need to lead healthy, meaningful lives in safe, vibrant neighborhoods. We call on policymakers and the public to uphold the long-standing independence of the charitable sector as a cornerstone of democratic society.

This is a moment for solidarity. Philanthropic independence protects our ability to act according to our values without fear of political reprisal; interdependence reminds us that our strength lies in relationship and mutual support.

Our Commitment

Philanthropy New York stands firmly with our members and partners across the sector. As a convener and holder of community, we are committed to using our voice and resources to:

  • Stand together in defense of philanthropic freedom and civic trust.
  • Build solidarity through relationships rooted in care, trust, and collaboration.
  • Create space for connection and learning that leads to collective action.

Solidarity requires relationship — being in community with one another, across differences, to uphold the vision that binds our work.

Philanthropy New York will continue to bring people together to listen, learn, and act. Our collective strength — and the well-being of our communities — depends on it.
