This program is hosted by our partner, Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR), who has extended an invitation to PNY members.*
Following the tragic shooting of two National Guard members in the nation’s capital that left one dead and the other in serious condition, the Trump administration has exploited the tragedy by unleashing a torrent of xenophobic rhetoric and new policy announcements targeting lawful migration pathways and immigrant and refugee communities.
Employing collective punishment based on the violent act of an individual, the administration announced they would not only halt the issuance of visas for anyone traveling with an Afghan passport, but also entirely suspend all asylum decisions, regardless of an individual’s country of origin. In an extraordinarily toxic and dangerous speech, the president referred to Somalis as "garbage he doesn't want in the country," with enforcement actions launched in Minneapolis and St. Paul, home to sizeable Somali populations. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has also announced an expansion to Trump’s travel ban from 19 countries to approximately 30 total, referring to immigrants from those nations as “killers, leeches, and entitlement junkies.” The ban largely targets the Global South, including nations in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East.
In addition to these destructive policies, the administration previously stated their intention to revisit the issuance of all green cards and asylum determinations made during the Biden presidency; pause all green card, citizenship, and asylum applications from countries previously targeted by the travel ban; deport those deemed "non-compatible with Western Civilization"; and "denaturalize migrants who undermine domestic security."
In light of these emerging developments, GCIR will hold a special funder briefing to explore what philanthropy can do in this moment to respond to these attacks. We will hear from frontline organizations working to defend and support Afghan and Somali communities, as well as movement leaders seeking to preserve the asylum and refugee settlement systems, with recommendations for philanthropic action.
