Knowledge of the policy/advocacy environment has never been more important for philanthropic organizations. Not only must funders have firm grasp of the legalities and potential effectiveness of their grantees’ advocacy efforts, they are also facing increasing demands and different imperatives to exercise their own organizational voice.
The Policy Core Course consists of four sessions delivered over two half-days, offering training to foundation trustees and staff at all levels help navigate the legal, strategic, and governance practices necessary to incorporate advocacy and amplify your work.
Philanthropic organizations – whether private foundations, community foundations, public charities, corporate foundations or family foundations – have considerable legal rights to exercise their voice in public policy discussions, but there are limitations. Today, when the imperative to speak out seems more intense than ever, every staff member at every level should consider investing in a refresher on the limits – and the considerable breadth – foundations have to engage in public debate.
Even if your foundation makes the legitimate choice to remain silent on policy concerns, it is important for every person in your organization to know your rights and your limitations. Those boundaries are complicated, in part because there are significant differences between federal laws and New York State and City laws that could necessitate burdensome reporting requirements.
Back by popular demand, this year’s redesigned course consolidates much of the policy-focused programming that our members have rated highly, adds new concepts requested by members and provides maximum flexibility and choice for participants. This in-depth program is structured to allow people at different levels of knowledge and responsibility to engage as they choose.
Reserve your spot for all four sessions OR pick-and-choose which of the four are right for you. Each module will complement the next, but all four programs can stand alone. The first half-day concentrates on the basics and laws governing foundation limitations, as well as successful approaches to implementation and administrative advocacy after a campaign. The second half-day focuses on New York State-level campaigns and the work with foundation boards.
