As leaders committed to a more equitable, sustainable, and democratic society, many members of the Philanthropy New York community are asking what is required of their institutions as changes in the political landscape impact our work. While each of us may be impacted differently, we are hearing a common desire across the philanthropic community to be thoughtful about how we make sense of these shifts and adapt strategies to maximize our collective impact.

Commissioned by the Arcus Foundation and designed as an open resource for grantees and the wider conservation and social justice movements, the report showcases the issues often faced by those in both sectors. It includes an overview of behavior change theories, a compilation of successful behavior change campaigns, lessons learned, and tools for planning new initiatives.
What Lies Beneath: The State of NYC Nonprofit Board Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
The report is a result of a six month study conducted with the NYC Nonprofit Board Development Coalition, led by NYC Service, which assessed nonprofit board composition, board policies, as well as procedures. The study discovered that nonprofit leadership demographics do not reflect the diversity of New York City; DEI is valued, but not effectively addressed; representation in leadership matters; board complacency and resistance to change impede DEI; and boards may be perpetuating harmful biases.
