Foundations often provide funding to mitigate socio-economic and political inequities experienced by people based on their race, ethnicity, gender, and other minority status. Perhaps now, more than ever, as awareness of economic and racial inequality in the United States is heightened, we can play a critical role.
However, are foundations doing enough to promote equity in institutional representation and engagement across sectors? For example, we know people of color in the U.S. represent more than a third of the total population and are expected to make up about 50% in the next 20 years. Women already represent more than half of the U.S. population. But when it comes to leadership on boards and as executive staff, all sectors, including the nonprofit, consistently have few minorities and women at the top.
What, if anything, can philanthropy do to support more diverse representation within positions of power? What impact would that have? Numbers count, but what else must change so that greater diversity among leaders actually makes a difference?
Join us for a lively discussion on philanthropy's role in shifting the paradigm, supporting increased leadership equity for greater impact across sectors.
