‘Bro’ Adams Joins Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as Senior Fellow
William D. “Bro” Adams, former president of Colby College and past chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is joining the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as a senior fellow.
Adams, who lives in Falmouth, will begin his new job Aug. 1. When he resigned as NEH chairman in May, Adams told the Press Herald he would remain active in the arts. “I intend to be very active in the humanities’ community and to continue making the case for the importance of the humanities and the arts in our national life,” he said.
“Bro has been a stalwart public servant, highly regarded educational leader, and steadfast defender of the importance of the arts and humanities to the wellbeing of a vibrant, literate democracy,” Mellon Foundation President Earl Lewis said a press release announcing the appointment.
Michael S. McPherson, outgoing president of the Spencer Foundation, also was appointed a senior fellow.
“I’m very grateful to the Mellon Foundation for the opportunity to continue to speak and write about the importance of the humanities,” Adams said in a statement. “I’m also looking forward to assisting the foundation with projects that might benefit from my experiences at NEH and in higher education. The chance to advance my own research and writing is also very exciting to me.”
