Edgar M. Bronfman, Sr., the son of legendary Canadian liquor magnate Samuel Bronfman, who expanded his family's business internationally and, as President of the World Jewish Congress and the Samuel Bronfman Foundation, promoted global advocacy as well as educational and social programs designed to "inspire a renaissance in Jewish life," died on December 21 at the age of 84.
"In his active and full life, Edgar never tired of learning, exploring and doing. He was the first of his kind, a titan of industry that dedicated himself fully to advocating, advancing and encouraging the Jewish people," wrote Dana Raucher, Executive Director of The Samuel Bronfman Foundation, in a statement on the foundation's website. "Edgar's philanthropic legacy will continue long after this day, and the Jewish world will continue to be shaped and served by his vision."
