The William T. Grant Foundation is pleased to announce that Prudence L. Carter, Ph.D., and Scott C. Evans, C.F.A., have joined its Board of Trustees.
Dr. Carter is a Professor of Education and (by courtesy) Sociology at Stanford University, and Faculty Director of the John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities. Prior to joining Stanford, she was an Associate Professor of Sociology at Harvard University and a Ford Postdoctoral Fellow on Poverty and the Underclass at the University of Michigan.
Her research focuses on academic achievement disparities and social inequality, particularly in relation to race, ethnicity, class, gender, culture and identity. Dr. Carter is the author of two books, "Keepin’ It Real: School Success Beyond Black and White" and "Stubborn Roots: Race, Culture, and Inequality in U.S. and South African Schools." She recently co-edited "Closing the Opportunity Gap: What America Must Do to Give Every Child an Even Chance" and has written a host of published journal articles, book chapters and essays. She earned a Master's of Arts in Sociology and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Master's and doctorate in Sociology from Columbia University.
“Prudence Carter is one of the nation’s leading scholars of education and inequality and her work has provided strong support for evidence-based policy and practice,” said Adam Gamoran, President of the Foundation. “I have followed her work for years and used it in my own research and teaching. She comes to the Board at a critical time, as we are charting new directions that intersect with her expertise, and I am delighted we will have her wisdom in our deliberations.”
Mr. Evans was most recently Executive Vice President of TIAA-CREF and President of its Asset Management subsidiaries, which managed nearly $500 billion in proprietary investment assets. He has held various executive positions, including Chief Investment Officer, since joining the company in 1985. He currently serves as a member of the investment committee of Tufts University, as an external advisor to the Dutch pension fund ABP and as a trustee of the IFRS Foundation, which sets accounting standards for more than 100 countries.
He was also a member of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Advisory Committee on Improvement to Financial Reporting, the Board of Trustees of Barnard College and the Dean’s Advisory Council at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. In addition, Evans chaired the Finance Committee of the Rockefeller Family Fund. He earned his M.B.A. from Northwestern University.
