Statement on the Impact of the 2024 Presidential Election
The results of the 2024 Presidential election have made clear that the fight for a more equitable, democratic, and sustainable society is a continuous effort both in our sector and the communities we serve. As a diverse community of funders, Philanthropy New York’s membership is in a powerful position to show up and take action in the coming months and years with courage, boldness, and intention.
We remain committed to advancing the anti-racist principles laid out in our strategic framework: to work to become a sector characterized by a “power with” approach—one in which foundations build power with communities and nonprofit partners, ensuring those with proximity to the lived experience inform and lead strategy with the capacity and strength to implement and/or advocate for solutions. We will continue to support our members - as individuals and institutions - in developing the leadership necessary to actively address and dismantle racism and inequity within our structures, policies, and systems.
This moment calls on philanthropy to use its relative privilege responsibly, moving resources swiftly, flexibly, and sufficiently to grantees. As the operating environment for nonprofits and community groups becomes more challenging, we must work creatively and collectively to address and ally with those leading the work on the ground. This work can only be done in community and we are here to create spaces for collective action as we strive to create a more just and equitable future together.
