Open Society Foundations Name Laura Carvalho as the New Global Director of Equity Following Organizational Transformation
NEW YORK—The Open Society Foundations announced today that Laura Carvalho, a leading Brazilian progressive economist, will become their first global director of Equity, heading the Foundations’ global work to address a broad range of structural and economic inequalities.
In June, when Carvalho starts her new role, she will join a global management team that focuses on the priorities of Justice and Intersectionality, Expression, and Climate Justice, created as part of a broad transformation of Open Society’s programs and operations.
“Laura will work at the global level with the Global Programs leadership team, regional programs, and other colleagues across the network to design, implement, and support integrated programs under our Equity framework,” said Salil Shetty, vice president of Global Programs at the Open Society Foundations.
Carvalho brings considerable experience and knowledge of our issues as co-founder and director of the Research Center on Macroeconomics of Inequality at the University of São Paulo and an associate professor of macroeconomics. She is a senior fellow at the Schwartz Center for Economic Policy Analysis and earned her PhD in economics from the New School for Social Research in New York. She is the author of numerous books, book chapters, and journal articles focused on macroeconomics, development economics, and inequality. Additionally, she was previously a columnist for Brazilian newspapers Nexo Jornal and Folha de S. Paulo.
Carvalho will lead the development of strategies to promote the full inclusion of all people in the communities in which they live and work, with full access to public services and rights protections. The Global Programs’ Equity work also includes advancing a just financial recovery, and strengthening tax and anticorruption frameworks, as well as promoting corporate accountability, effective and humane drug policies, and new models for refugee protection.
