How well do you know your subconscious?  Why does it matter?   The mind sciences show us that there are a critical set of unconscious perceptions driving choices and responses in ways that may belie our stated and even consciously believed goals of racial equity.  Why is this the case? The unconscious messages we receive that shape our beliefs and reactions are often discussed in terms of race, but Implicit Bias also affects our perceptions about the size of organizations, leaders of organizations, and other identifying factors.

Implicit bias can also lead to subtle and powerful messages that we convey to grantees and others.  Our microbehaviors, ways in which body and verbal language convey ideology about power and privilege, can be powerful tools in marginalizing or empowering communities.  Are we aware of our own behavior and attitudes?  Implicit bias and microbehaviors may lead funders to fall short of their own goals to promote equity.  When understood, they can be used in powerful ways to promote inclusion.

Join us as we explore how implicit bias and microbehaviors impact the way we work, our workplace and our communities.

Explore:
  • How our implicit biases and microaggressions impact our decision-making as individuals and institutions
  • What steps can be taken to counteract our biases, perceptions and behaviors individually and institutionally
  • Countering microaggressions with microaffirmations
