What does it mean to do grantmaking with a racial justice lens? Are you and your team experiencing internal resistance? Is your organization getting stuck on definitions and which practice shift comes first? What do you need to break down internally in order to better identify the ways you want to operate differently, in service to racial justice?

Philanthropic Initiative for Racial Equity (PRE)’s Grantmaking with a Racial Justice Lens was released at the start of 2020, shortly before the start of the global pandemic and then the largest global-wide mass movement protests following the murder of George Floyd. While many foundations and corporations declared commitments to racial justice, PRE’s 2021 report, Mismatched: Philanthropy’s Response to the Call for Racial Justice showed that the actual investments in both racial equity and racial justice were drastically less than headlines and even some other reports stated.

Whether your foundation has stepped up to shift practice, increased giving toward racial equity and racial justice, stalled, or faced internal struggles and even backlash, we invite you to a peer learning exchange to work through the mechanics of thinking through grantmaking with a racial justice lens.

Join this engaging session for an opportunity to deepen some practical approaches for shifting funding. Come prepared having reviewed the Grantmaking with a Racial Justice Lens guide and having identified concrete challenges to workshop with peers

What will you learn?

  • How change agents within foundations can move their institutions to the next level in their racial justice work
  • Approaches to best tackle resistance in shifting practice towards grantmaking with a racial justice lens
  • How to break down the grantmaking and decision-making process in order to identify and achieve more racially just outcomes

Who should attend?

All interested funders in grantmaking roles. What to expect: workshop.
