Research suggests that between 8% and 14% of older adults in New York are food-insecure, but little is understood about how these individuals experience hunger. Better data on food-insecure older adults, especially for individuals who are currently not participating in food access programs could help advocates, philanthropic organizations, and older adult-serving nonprofits shape strategies to improve access to food benefits and older adult feeding programs. New York Health Foundation will present findings from a forthcoming report on food-insecure older adults across the State, including their geographic distribution, socio-economic status, and food benefit program (SNAP, home-delivered and congregate meals) participation.

What else should you know?
The New York Age-Friendly Funders is a peer network of grantmakers who fund or are interested in the program area of healthy aging and services for older adults. The network aims to advance members’ knowledge of (1) current and emerging needs among older adults and the organizations that serve them and (2) opportunities and challenges in funding effective NYC area programs that are working to address these needs. Philanthropy New York members funding or interested in older adult services and healthy aging in New York are invited to join the group's meetings.
