The New HR Challenge - Managing Misclassification Risks

At this FAN meeting, Amanda Fugazy walked attendees through the new risks facing nonprofits by misclassifying employees – in particular, consultants, volunteers, and interns. Both the IRS and the Department of Labor are undertaking efforts to identify cases of misclassification in order to recoup unpaid taxes. With back wages, benefits, lawyers and accountant fees, penalties and staff time, the costs can be very high to an organization.
