The federal Department of Education’s Promise Neighborhoods Initiative is challenging organizations across the country to craft bold service networks that would provide youth in low-income communities with the support they need to thrive from birth to college. The prototype for the initiative was the Harlem Children’s Zone; four New York City nonprofits have won Promise Neighborhood planning grants to create similar networks in Sunset Park and Flatbush in Brooklyn, central Harlem in Manhattan, and Long Island City in Queens.
