In recent years, the NYC education and workforce sectors have made significant strides in addressing the need for advising young adults on both college and career pathways, including the development of coalitions, directories, tools, trainings, and more.

Over the last several months, there have been a number of conversations among key stakeholders around some consistent “low-hanging” systemic challenges related to connecting young people to best-fit postsecondary and workforce opportunities. For example: lack of a clearinghouse/hub to access quality career exploration/advising resources (and guidance on how to use them); no centralized location to find real-time workforce program deadlines (without which, NYC professionals are not able to support youth in future planning and/or finding opportunities that meet real-time needs); need for broader adoption of training program directories that are critical to helping youth find best-fit opportunities; and challenges around sustainably maintaining and updating these career development tools/resources to ensure they remain accurate, high-quality, and relevant over time.

This panel will explore these challenges and engage participants in an early discussion around potential solutions.  We will also discuss the need to collaboratively design a package of concrete, achievable solutions and form a public-private partnership between funders and government to co-invest in these solutions so they can become embedded within NYC’s postsecondary advising infrastructure.
