Community Anchors for Innovative Digital Media Learning, Makerspaces, and After-school Programming
The Center for an Urban Future reports that no New York City institution is doing more to bridge the knowledge gap than its systems of public libraries. With maker spaces, coding classes, digital media labs, and high bandwidth access, libraries are equipping young people with the skills to succeed in today’s—and tomorrow’s—global marketplace, building on their interests and connecting them to valuable resources and peers.
According to a new study from the American Library Association, nearly all of the country’s libraries offer workforce development and technology skills training. To address the need for dedicated teen centers where youth can learn digital media skills and explore their interests, the Institute of Museums and Library Services supports 21st Century Learning Labs nationwide; and the Brooklyn Public Library is spreading teen media programs to branches around the borough. Libraries are also on the cutting edge of connectivity and strategies to bridge the digital divide. Kansas City Public Library is collaborating with Google Fiber to develop “Fiberhoods” that will provide the library and neighborhoods with a fiber optic network to access data almost instantly.
