Conversations about the new economy often revolve around negative trends, from the expansion of low-wage, low-quality, insecure jobs to the rise in contingent and temporary work for a diminishing middle class. Many are concerned that as subcontracting in global industries grows, workers will be distanced further from their real employers, and they and local communities will have even less input into development and industrial policies that address issues of unemployment and underemployment.
But there is another way to approach this conversation. Communities and workers across the country are already shaping a future new economy that is just, equitable and sustainable for all. They are focusing on the nature of work, and on how to create quality jobs with family-sustaining wages, stable work schedules, and guaranteed protection and expansion of rights, as well as with opportunities for advancement and careers. They are developing new economic models —worker and community ownership, triple bottom line corporate structures, community capital investment and more — that can incentivize quality jobs and sustainable businesses that are good for workers and our shared economic prosperity. This session will dream big about the nature of work in the new economy.
Join us to hear how workers and communities are responding to the crisis in the "old" economy by preparing for the next new one.
