Hurricane Harvey destroyed roughly a third of Houston’s housing stock and temporarily displaced 70,000 people. In New York City, more than 62,000 homeless people fill municipal shelters every night. At least 23,000 of the City’s homeless are children and roughly 3,000 are unaccompanied youth.
In Houston, the philanthropic response to Harvey was swift and overwhelming. But in NYC’s ongoing homelessness crisis, only a handful of funders dedicate themselves to addressing this pressing public health issue. A more coordinated and informed philanthropic response – in partnership with the public and private sectors -- could dramatically reduce homelessness, increase employability, boost school performance, better health, improve life outcomes, and restore human dignity.
There are solutions to learn from. By coordinating efforts and developing public-private partnerships the City of New York was able to prioritize veteran chronic homelessness and over a two-year period achieve the ambitious goal of ending veteran homelessness. Now, efforts across the country are applying learnings from the work to end chronic veteran homelessness to reduce youth and young adult homelessness.
Philanthropy New York and Funders Together to End Homelessness invite you to join funders in New York City to discuss innovative solutions and current opportunities to increase housing stability and ultimately end youth and young adult homelessness in the city. Join your funder colleagues in a conversation with government officials and insightful and experienced practitioners to examine approaches most likely to succeed in reducing the number of homeless youth and young adults.
