In recent years, a growing number of foundations have developed the awarding of prizes as a strategy for achieving their philanthropic goals. Prizes have the potential to advance a foundation’s mission in ways that can substantially augment the impact of regular grantmaking: they can raise public awareness of a cause, foster innovation, harness crowd-sourcing, and highlight model examples of leadership and impact. Funders have awarded prizes on such wide-ranging topics as fostering collaboration among nonprofits, finding innovative solutions for job creation, supporting translational stem cell research … and reinventing the toilet.
In this funder briefing, three foundation leaders will discuss how their foundations have used prizes to advance their missions, how they decided to do so, and the decisions and challenges they faced in developing and launching new prize programs.
