In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Brooklyn’s Red Hook Initiative (RHI), one of the three winners of the 2012 NYCT-New York Magazine Nonprofit Excellence Awards, became a hub of emergency disaster relief for their entire neighborhood. In a new blog post, RHI Board President Lisa Cowan shares the story of their hurricane relief efforts and how a small community-based nonprofit used their management practices and institutional focus to go above and beyond their mission.
