The Program
A participatory discussion on revising language, practice, and purpose for a values-aligned and grantee-centered process in a rapidly changing environment
As the funding landscape and operating environment undergo rapid change, many nonprofits are facing the need to recalibrate their business models and plan for previously unexpected scenarios. In this session, we will discuss critical issues for nonprofits in an era of increased scrutiny and shifting revenue models, as well as what supports organizations may need as they navigate these new challenges. Incorporating considerations for equity, we will also explore building an approach to assessing a grantee's financial health that is values-aligned, encourages more nuanced conversations between grantmakers and grantees, and strengthens relationships.
What will you learn?
In this session, participants can expect to:
- Discuss strategies funders have considered or adopted to support their grantees as they confront increased scrutiny and business model stress
- Unpack the purposes of financial due diligence, with an eye toward a grantee-centered and trust-based approach
- Approach the dialogue around a grantee’s financial health from a place of learning and support
- Deepen fluency in financial management concepts to support more effective communication with grantees
Speaker
- Hilda Polanco, Market Managing Principal, BDO Nonprofit & Grantmaker Advisory
Who should attend?
All interested funders in grantmaking roles. Funders with less than two years of experience in the field – program-officers, CEOs, and other staff, as well as trustees.
