The Program

During this session, we will focus on a participatory discussion on revising language, practice, and purpose for an increasingly values-aligned and grantee-centered process. Grantmakers can often articulate resonant, relevant values that guide their grantmaking practices, but then struggle to incorporate those same values within their framework for financial due diligence. Incorporating considerations for equity, this session will explore building an approach to assessing a grantee’s financial health that is values-aligned, encourages more nuanced conversations between Grantmakers and grantees, and strengthens relationships.

What will you learn?

In this session, participants can expect to:

  • Unpack the purposes of financial due diligence, with an eye toward a grantee-centered and trust-based approach
  • Approach the dialogue around a grantee’s financial health from a place of learning and support
  • Deepen your fluency in financial management concepts to support more effective communication with grantees
  • Explore how your organization’s values are reflected in your financial review practices

Who should attend?

All interested funders in grantmaking roles, especially grantmakers who have had 2-3 years of experience and program officers who have attended the Essential Skills and Strategies for New Program Officers and the Fundamentals to Financials. Funders will find added value to the workshop if they are able to come with another colleague. What to expect: Presentation blended with breakout discussions.
