Program executives and those who lead grantmaking strategy and practice are invited to attend a breakfast conversation about leadership transitions in nonprofit organizations.

The idea for this meeting originated from our observations that a number of executive level transitions are taking place in nonprofit social justice groups. We see this as both a challenge and an opportunity. The exit of leadership can be a stressful time for an organization; at the same time it opens new possibilities. For instance, one question we have is how philanthropy can better support new leaders of color who are interested and willing to step into these roles.

Over a decade ago, the anticipated exit of the baby boom generation was seen as a crisis that would wreak havoc on the nonprofit sector. The field of Executive Transition Management was developed to help boards navigate these changes using an organizational development lens; there was also a rise in Interim Executive Directors to fill the gap between the exiting leader and hiring of a new one.

We are curious about best practices for philanthropy in organizations experiencing leadership transitions now, especially for small and midsize groups that may not have the resources for extensive support. During our time together, we plan to focus on sharing experiences, raising concerns, and identifying what we would like to learn.

Explore
  • Types of transitions that are taking place
  • Where new leadership is being trained and nurtured, especially leaders of color
  • How to support new leaders of color
  • What are the elements of a “healthy” transition

Frances Kunreuther and Sean Thomas-Breitfeld will facilitate this conversation. They have a long history in writing about generation shifts in nonprofit leadership, the leadership in leaving, and the nonprofit racial leadership gap.
