It’s a tough time for nonprofits all across the United States. Years of government cost-cutting, shifting priorities and funding systems that prevent nonprofits from building long-term financial stability are pushing essential community organizations to the brink – and sometimes over it. But more and more funders are recognizing the structural difficulties nonprofits are facing and taking action. One of most innovative philanthropic leaders is the Weingart Foundation in Los Angeles.
The Weingart Foundation, and its CEO Fred Ali, have been extraordinarily effective in advocating for policies and practices that increase nonprofit sustainability. Most recently, Ali was a crucial voice calling on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to officially extend OMB Uniform Guidance on Overhead to LA nonprofits. Passed last fall, the Supervisors’ resolution mandated the County Chief Executive to consult with Los Angeles nonprofits to develop an implementation strategy, and it also called for a letter to be signed by all five supervisors to urge California’s state leaders to fully embrace and implement OMB rules.
In a conversation with Clark Foundation Executive Director and PNY Public Policy Committee Co-Chair Doug Bauer, Ali will talk about the Weingart Foundation’s results in LA and about the strategies that might be employed in New York to increase the sustainability of the nonprofit sector.
