Each year, in October, GIA holds its Annual Conference, with more than 200 top local and national funders, in one of America’s great cities. For 2019, they are excited to bring the meeting to New York City — a melting pot of unique people, places, and points of view. Their venue is The New York Marriott Downtown, close to the Statute of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the 9/11 Tribute and Museum. New York City is also home to numerous creative innovative programs that benefit older adults.

For example, The John A. Hartford Foundation, collaborating with local funding partners, has been working to create a movement of age-friendly health systems. Integral to this work has been support for New York City hospitals, universities, and nonprofits to develop model programs that emphasize the “4Ms,” which include: (1) What Matters? Know and align care with each older adult’s specific health outcome goals and care preferences, including, but not limited to, family caregivers, end-of-life care, and across settings of care. (2) Medications. If medication is necessary, use age-friendly medications that do not interfere with What Matters to the older adult. (3) Mentation. Prevent, identify, treat, and manage dementia, depression, and delirium across settings of care. (4) Mobility. Ensure that older adults move safely every day to maintain function and do What Matters.

New York City is an exciting venue for GIA’s 2019 Annual Conference, which promises to be an invigorating forum to learn from and network with aging philanthropy colleagues who think and act beyond boundaries every day. They hope that you will join them, both in the conference rooms, as well as at local sites and attractions, such as Central Park, Broadway theaters and many, many more.
