Philanthropy New York Stands in Solidarity With The Asian American and Pacific Islander Community
Philanthropy New York stands in solidarity with our colleagues and members who are grieving and outraged over the vicious and violent hate crimes against Asian women in Atlanta on Tuesday evening.
The murder of 8 people, including 6 Asian women, follows a long pattern of violence and systemic discrimination against Asian Americans in this country. In Philanthropy New York’s newly affirmed values, we pledged to name and work to dismantle the historical and present-day structures and narratives that lie at the root of inequity. We must understand and reckon with how this particular act of white supremacy sits at the intersection of racism, misogyny, and anti-immigrant structures.
We encourage our members to center the voices of the leaders in our community, including Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP) and Native Americans in Philanthropy (NAP), who share their expertise. We are fortunate to have leaders who help us to understand the ways that we can move forward in an accountable relationship with AAPI communities.
We encourage our members to:
Learn: Understand the history of exclusionary policies, racialized violence, and cultural narratives intended to uphold white supremacy.
• Watch the Korean American Community Foundation’s webinar, Anti-Asian Racism & Violence: Then and Now.
• Explore the history of violence and state-sponsored exclusion and imprisonment of Asian-Americans that serve as a foundation for current hateful rhetoric and actions.
• Build awareness of the ways the 'model minority' myth has served to uphold white supremacy in the US.
• Interrogate the ways that misogyny, racism, and anti-immigration ideology intersect in this particular attack.
• Attend the Raben Group’s free program on Countering Hate Against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders on March 25th.
Lead: As individuals and institutions, we offer ways for you to follow the calls of AAPI leaders to exercise your influence and build community.
• Access the AAPIP resource directory to learn more about the ways that you can support AAPI communities.
• Follow calls on philanthropy to act made by our colleague organizations AAPIP and NAP.
• Express solidarity with AAPI communities at the Asian American Federation’s vigil on March 19th in Union Square.
• As an individual citizen, you can contact your representative to support Congresswoman Grace Meng’s Anti-Hate Legislation.
• Donate directly to support the victims and their families and to support crisis interventions created by Asian Americans Advancing Justice Atlanta.
