The Rising Importance of Cities - Philanthropy New York Spotlight Series

More than half of the world's population now live in cities. According to the United Nations, the world urban population is expected to increase by about 85 percent, from 3.4 billion in 2009 to a whopping 6.3 billion in 2050. As more and more people are attracted to urban centers, we've entered the age of the preeminence of cities. Cities show great promise for better lives for so many, yet cities often struggle to absorb the needs of increased numbers of city dwellers as populations spike. Many cities and city leaders lack the tools to engage globally, especially under added pressure caused by unhelpful national governments around the world. This new urban age has implications for every grantmaking portfolio. Join us for this series where foundation leaders and city representatives share why cities should increasingly be on our philanthropy radar, and how funders can invest in the effectiveness of cities worldwide.

U.S. cities have become very attractive to foreign investors across a range of industries, from manufacturing to pharmaceuticals. Today 20 percent of U.S. exports are thanks to foreign investors in our country. Likewise international cities are very interested in attracting foreign investment and growing their trade practices. Despite growing interest, mayors in the U.S. and internationally don't always know how to foster and manage public-private partnerships. Join this program to hear from senior private sector leaders and philanthropy executives about advice philanthropy organizations are lending to city leaders to develop foreign investment and trade strategies. Also hear about ways that strengthening investment in cities has an impact on a range of other issues philanthropy cares about.
