Bloomberg Gives $14M for Global Tobacco-Use Monitoring

The CDC Foundation has announced a two-year, $14 million grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies to enable the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct tobacco-usage surveys in eleven countries.

Part of the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, the grant will support implementation of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) and the Tobacco Questions for Surveys (TQS), both components of the CDC Global Tobacco Surveillance System. Results from the survey, which will be conducted in partnership with the World Health Organization, will be used to enhance participating countries’ capacity to design, implement, and evaluate tobacco control interventions for their adult populations. The GATS will be repeated in eleven countries, including Vietnam, which is slated to implement the survey in early 2015. The remaining countries, which are scheduled to begin another round of the GATS over the next two years, are being finalized.
