Join the New York City Workforce Funders Collaborative and field leaders for a deep dive on CUNY enrollment trends and what the decline in enrollment means for the college leaders, industry partners, and funders working to increase student career success.
Nationwide, community colleges have seen a sharp drop in enrollment during the pandemic. Facing new financial pressures, care-giving responsibilities, an uncertain labor market, and barriers to online learning, many CUNY students have chosen not to enroll or continue their pre-pandemic courses of study. At the same time, the workforce development ecosystem is adapting to a restructured labor market and an expansion of sectors (including healthcare and tech) that promise to connect New Yorkers—particularly those in underserved communities—to better jobs.
Will the myriad and long-standing efforts to fulfill CUNY’s promise as an engine of economic mobility—from strengthening degree and non-degree programs to expanding internship and apprenticeship opportunities—bring students back in the short term and position them to secure a greater share of good jobs in the long term? What other systems-change strategies are needed for CUNY and its students to emerge more resilient from this crisis?
