Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art Awards $2.4 Million in Grants
The Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, an operating foundation supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation in New York City, has announced fifteen grants totaling $2.49 million in support of arts and media projects dedicated to strengthening relationships between U.S. Muslim and non-Muslim communities.
Awarded through the foundation's Building Bridges 2018-2019 Program, the grants include support for theatrical and literary programming, documentary films, hands-on workshops, and a "jingle truck" created by a Pakistani truck-art painter that will tour elementary schools. Other recipients include StoryCorps, which was awarded $300,000 in support of a three-year story-collection project designed to encourage empathy, trust, and relationships among Muslim and non-Muslim neighbors; Jannus, which will receive $135,000 in support of the Refugee Speakers' Bureau, a live, multicultural storytelling project in Boise, Idaho, and Salt Lake City; and the Commonwealth Theatre Center, which was awarded $225,000 to expand a theater education residency program that documents the experiences of Muslim and non-Muslim youth and transforms their narratives into theatrical performances...
