Legislator To Propose Federal Tax On Sugary Drinks

During a video address on Thursday to the second National Soda Summit in Washington, D.C., an event supported in part by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Rep. Laura DeLauro, D-Conn., announced that she is working on legislation to tax sugar-sweetened beverages, and hopes to introduce a bill "in a matter of weeks."

The two-day gathering brought together leading researchers and scientists, public health officials, foundation executives, and community activists. Discussions focused on the most effective strategies to reduce soda-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. The event was organized by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest.
