In response to member interest, Philanthropy New York piloted a new peer network last fall to create a peer-learning community for NYC-based philanthropic advisors. The network aims to provide a supportive space for advisors to build relationships with peers and dig in to the professional challenges and opportunities that come with this role. We are excited to continue this pilot in 2014, and invite interested members to join us.
Meeting Topic: Communicating your work, role, and skill-set to different audiences
Consultants and advisors regularly interact with a wide range of audiences - from colleagues within financial firms to current and potential clients to the general public.
- How do you effectively communicate the work you do and the role of an advisor to audiences both within philanthropy and outside the field?
- What are the biggest misconceptions you encounter about your job or the field?
- What strategies do you employ to address these misconceptions?
- How do you balance being able to talk about the successes and challenges of your work without sharing confidential client information?
Carol Gallo (TCC Group), Caroline Woodruff (Bessemer Trust) and Mafruza Kahn will serve as our peer discussion leaders for small and large group conversations to explore these questions and many more. We look forward to sharing strategies that support you as a professional and the field of philanthropic advising.

This meeting is open to philanthropic advisors who are members of Philanthropy New York and meet the following criteria.
- Work with high net worth individuals and families on their philanthropic strategy and giving (foundations, donor advised funds, or personal)
- Work with multiple clients instead of advising a single donor or foundation
- Lead programmatic work and/or serve as the primary relationship manager. Although research and support staff interface with clients, this network is open to professionals who are the programmatic lead or main relationship manager.
- Work primarily with funders. If you provide advisory and consulting services to funders and nonprofits, please come with your funder hat on.
- Have been in this role for at least one year.
