Poverty Falls, Income Rises. Should De Blasio Get the Credit?
The New Yorkers who live in that other city Mayor Bill de Blasio talks about so often—the one he wants to help—are doing much better these days. The question is how much credit he deserves for it.
The percentage of New Yorkers living in poverty has declined significantly for the second year in a row, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau last week and crunched by economist James Parrott of the Center for New York City Affairs. Real median family income rose slightly more than 5% in 2016, to $65,440, meaning that after adjusting for inflation, family income has finally inched past the level in 2008, before the recession took its toll. . .
