Jonas Center Supports Global Health Nursing in the Dominican Republic
The Jonas Center supports the Dominican Republic Medical Partnership and the University of Missouri in their efforts to expand a successful grassroots hypertension screening and treatment program to under-served communities in the Dominican Republic (DR). The first funded project was implemented in four communities in January 2016 with mobile clinics held every three months for one year. The team reports that the access to antihypertensive medications and scheduled long-term medical follow-up provided by this project were unprecedented in these communities and very well-received.
Due to the success of this program, the Jonas Center expanded the partnership to support six Jonas Global Nurse Fellows from the University of Missouri who are focused on hypertension treatment and prevention in these under-served communities and seven Dominican students to become Registered Nurses in the DR.
