Proteus Fund Serves as Fiscal Sponsor for LGBT Nonprofits and Initiatives
With fears that federal funding for LGBT nonprofits and other progressive groups could dry up under the administration of President Donald Trump, a new fund backed by two national donor networks has launched to fill the gap.
Called the Emergent Fund, the pot of grant money is being overseen by the Solidaire Network and the Women Donors Network. The two fundraising networks, with offices in the Bay Area, launched the effort in mid-December with a goal of raising $500,000 by Inauguration Day to award to various groups during Trump's first 100 days in office and thereafter on a continuing basis.
As explained in a news release last month announcing the launch of the Emergent Fund, the two progressive fundraising groups said they created it "to empower historically under-resourced movements to get ready and fight back against immediate threats to marginalized communities due to the division embraced by the incoming Trump administration."
The two networks seeded the fund with $150,000 last month and have been asking their members to donate toward it. The nonprofit Proteus Fund is serving as its fiscal sponsor, so all donations are tax deductible...
