U.S. Seeks Decades in Prison for Ex-Rikers Guard in Fatal Beating
Federal prosecutors on Monday asked a judge to sentence a former correction officer on Rikers Island to nearly 30 years in prison for violating the civil rights of a seriously ill inmate who died after the officer assaulted him.
The officer, Brian Coll, 48, kicked the inmate, Ronald Spear, repeatedly in the head while other officers held him face down on the floor, according to testimony and other evidence at the trial, which ended in December. . .
