Surdna Foundation Awards Grants Totaling $14 Million
The New York City-based Surdna Foundation has announced seventy-two grants totaling more than $14 million to organizations working to foster just and sustainable communities in the United States.
Second-quarter grants were awarded in the foundation's focus areas of strong local economies, sustainable environments, and thriving cultures. Recipients include the Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers, which was awarded $150,000 for its efforts to support anchor institutions working to create opportunities for Baltimore residents through economic inclusion strategies; the New York Women's Foundation, which will receive $150,000 over two years in support of its NYC Fund for Girls and Young Women of Color; the People's Action Institute in Chicago, which was awarded $300,000 in support of its climate justice efforts, which are focused on working-class people and communities of color; and the Meridian Institute in Dillon, Colorado, which will receive $50,000 in support of education and advocacy efforts around immigration policy and local and regional food systems and urban agriculture programs.
Other grants include $200,000 over two years to the Asian American Writers' Workshop in New York City for three projects focused on artists of Asian-American, immigrant, and Muslim descent as well as efforts to engage communities of color; and $225,000 over three years to the Neighborhood Story Project to create an equitable model for the publishing of collaborative ethnographies that tell the stories of art, music, ritual, and activism in New Orleans.
