Red Tape, Frustration Pushing Out Applicants for Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Program, Report Shows

Hurricane Sandy victims have dropped out in droves from the city’s Build It Back recovery program, new data shows.

An analysis by City Controller Scott Stringer found steep declines in many of the 136 zip codes affected by Superstorm Sandy.

Three neighborhoods saw more than 1,000 families exit the program since 2014. The biggest drop was in New Dorp and Midland Beach on Staten Island, where 1,409 homeowners dropped out, out of the 2,650 who originally enrolled. . .
