NYS Health Foundation Challenges Philanthropy to Do more to Fix our Flawed Health Care System

NYSHealth outlines some ways in which philanthropy can best empower health care consumers: by treating patients a partners and pushing for information transparency. 

NYSHealth is supporting an advocacy effort to make the Certificate of Need process in New York State more consumer-friendly and transparent, so that community residents are in the room and able to comment when the state authorizing body is considering hospital consolidation and closure decisions that directly affect people’s lives.

We have launched an initiative to spread OpenNotes adoption at hospitals throughout New York State, giving patients visibility into their doctors’ clinical notes so that they can have a greater voice in their care. We are supporting a project that trains ombudsmen, nursing home residents, and their family members so that they can better advocate for adherence to, and benefit from, new federal standards in nursing home care...
