NY State Health Foundation Sees Need to Educate Consumers on State Obamacare Offerings
Anne Marie Paniagua is a single mom living in the Bronx. She earns about $400 a week, which she says doesn’t last her very long.
There is rent, food, clothing and day-care for her 2-year old son.
So last year, when she shopped for health insurance on the New York State exchange, she found the $150 monthly premium unaffordable.
“It was too much for me,” Paniagua, 23, said. “Realistically, doing the math, the money I have to spend, I didn’t want to take away from expenses I have to pay such as food and the light bill and rent.” . . .
Paniagua is typical of many who remain uninsured, according to national surveys. She values insurance but finds it too costly. . .
“There is a big burden on the state to get the word out about this new program,” said Amy Shefrin, program officer at the New York State Health Foundation.
