NCN Requests Foundations Sign on to Oppose Repeal of the Johnson Amendment
The National Council of Nonprofits is putting out an urgent call to all nonprofits and foundations to sign on to a Community Letter in Support of Nonpartisanship.
The Council on Foundations has advised that foundations can speak out on this issue, as is fall within the realm of self-defense. NCN says this push is extremely important now because their contacts on the Hill say the Trump Administration and Ways & Means Chairman Brady are intent on including a repeal of the Johnson Amendment in tax reform legislation.
Philanthropy New York spoke with key legislative staff about its official position on Johnson Amendment during last week’s Foundations on the Hill days and discovered very low levels of awareness of this issue.
This is a bi-partisan issue and all legislative staff we talked to seemed very open to our concerns. However, there is a good possibility that a repeal could be slipped into larger legislation to please small constituencies.
