Judge Lays into Justice Department Lawyer over ‘Heartless’ DACA Decision
A Brooklyn federal judge dressed down a Justice Department lawyer Tuesday for refusing to explain the Trump administration’s decision to keep the impending Oct. 5 deadline for DACA recipients to renew their status–calling the decision “heartless.”
“You are the executive branch,” Judge Nicholas Garaufis scolded Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate, after the government lawyer relayed that the Department of Homeland Security would not extend the deadline. “You work for the president, and so you would know if his commitment was going forward.”
The veteran judge then continued to lambast Shumate throughout the hour-long hearing, as the attorney attempted to dodge questions about whether or not Trump was indeed working toward a solution for so-called “Dreamers.” . . .
